Chiefly family, personal, business, and professional correspondence addressed to Joel Anderson Berly (1824-1888), a physician of Pomaria, S.C., from family and friends in South Carolina and Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Primary topics of letters include courtship and marriage, medicine and treatments; affairs of the Lutheran Church; politics in S.C. during antebellum and Reconstruction eras; African-American materials in the collection include labor contracts with freedmen and vouchers from Dr. J.A. Berly to Pomaria merchants in payment for purchases by freedmen employed by Berly. Correspondence and other items document the education of Joel Berly's son, John Eusebius Berly, at Newberry College, then located at Walhalla (Oconee County, S.C.); business correspondence and papers of J.S. Derrick & Co., of Leesville (Lexington County, S.C.); and courtship correspondence, 1873-1874, between John Adam Summer and Alice Efird. Four volumes, 1866-1883, consisting of medical account books of Dr. Joel Anderson Berly, including his sharecropper accounts with African Americans working on his farm.
